Pikes Peak Ascent, Colorado Springs, Colorado
So there I was, gasping for air in the final 200 meters of the 2001 Pikes Peak
Ascent race. The race begins at 6,000 feet in monument, Colorado and climbs
to the 14,000 foot summit of Pikes Peak. I finished in 3:26:51, which is my

Holloman AFB, New Mexico
I just got a T-38 ride. I had the time of my life and also puked up more than
I ever thought possible. Maybe someday I'll get to do that again over and over.

Grand Canyon, Arizona
It's spring break 2002. Len and I decide to go against all recommendations and
hike form the south rim of the grand canyon to the river and back up in the
same day. It takes nine hours and temps go above 100 at Phantom Ranch. March

Slick Rock Trail, Moab, Utah
On a spring break trip, I ride my mountain bike on the legendary "slick
rock" trail at the mountain biking capital of the world in Moab. Unfortunately,
while we are there, there was a gigantic Jeep Wrangler convention and we share
the slick rock with dozens of Jeeps, including one that rolled over. March 29,

Three-hundred feet elevation, English Countryside
Here I ride in the rear of a special operations HH-53 helicopter. We are returning
from a training mission over the North Sea. That's a 50 caliber machine gun
