Pompeii was buried in AD 79 by an eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvius, which killed 2,000 of the population of 20,000. It was rediscovered by a canal builder in the 16th century and excavations began in 1748. The above shows the original outer walls of the city. After the city became part of the roman empire, outer walls weren't need and houses were built upon them.
